Iconic Red Dresses We Love

Our Top 10 Iconic Red Dresses Through History

Just like the LBD, a red dress is a staple in any of our wardrobes. A go-to for Valentine’s Day dinner, late night cocktails or a girl’s trip to the races, we’re all about turning up the heat and leaving everyone red-faced. From velvet and satin to sequins and lace, the red dress comes in many forms -look no further than these iconic red dresses from some of our favourite films…

1. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes – Marilyn Monroe & Jane Russell (1953)

Famed for her legendary red lip, Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell took to the stage in a matching red sequin dress in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. We don’t know what we’re more obsessed with, the embellishment or the thigh split.

2. Funny Face – Audrey Hepburn (1957)

When a film is set in Paris, you’d expect it to live up to some style expectations, right? Funny Face definitely doesn’t disappoint with Givenchy designing all of Audrey’s costumes – including that red satin dress.

3. Who Framed Roger Rabbit - Jessica Rabbit (1988)

As one of the most renowned sex symbols ever, it goes without saying that Jessica Rabbit will always be the centre of attention in that red maxi dress. Or as the saying goes, “I’m not bad. I’m just drawn that way.” Sorry Roger.

4. Pretty Woman – Julia Roberts (1990)

When you’ve got a big date at the opera, you’ve got to pull out all the stops. Take note from Vivienne in a red Bardot dress and long white gloves that are all kinds of extra. Now all we need is that diamond necklace…

5. Death Becomes Her – Goldie Hawn (1992)

When you’ve just drank an elixir to make you young, beautiful and immortal, Helen’s red dress is the perfect outfit to ensure all eyes are most definitely on her, including Ernest.

6. Clueless – Cher Horowitz (1995)

What do you wear when you’ve invited a really hot boy from school over? A red mini dress of course. Cher Horowitz gave us all a lesson in dressing with her infamous “Sometimes you have to show a little skin” quote.

7. Sex & The City Movie – Samantha Jones (2008)

It may have been Carrie’s wedding, but our eyes were (temporarily) averted from that Vivienne Westwood number with Samantha’s red hot Zac Posen dress, giving us all kinds of salsa dancer emoji vibes.

8. Gangster Squad – Emma Stone (2012)

If we were dressed in a glamourous (and handmade) 1940s red dress and Ryan Gosling hit on us, we’d have a secret affair with him too. We don’t blame you Emma.

9. Me Before You – Emilia Clarke (2016)

This scene gets us every time. When Will tells Lou he “just wants to be a man whose been to a concert with a girl in a red dress” Lou doesn’t disappoint in her prom-esque red dress. And we’re glad she ditches the scarf!

10. Fifty Shades Darker – Anastasia Steel (2017)

It’s as if Ana knew when she donned that chic red midi dress that Christian would be popping the question at his birthday soiree. We just need to find our Mr. Grey now…
